Religion: Palm Sunday to Remember … Roman Catholics, Methodists, and Anglicans Meet Ecumenically

Palm Sunday 3

As you are aware it was on Palm Sunday, March 20, 2016 the annual celebration of the waving of palms which is an reenactment of this high religious observance.

Jesus rode on a colt through the streets of Jerusalem during the Jewish Passover observance. At the Passover Roman soldiers displayed their military hardware and regalia as a means of tightening their control and reminding citizens who their true masters were … in short who was in charge.

Sermonette

Palm Sunday 2

Ms. Mitchell, of the Methodist Community, an author, gave a short exhortation to the assembled congregations in which she said “We are celebrating the Jesus Christ who lives in us.” Referring to the recently concluded boys and girls championship sporting event, Ms. Mitchell reminded her rather attentive listeners that :” Some of the competitors were seen as underdogs but triumphed in the end. We too, (if) you are an underdog … in Christ today you can be victorious … consider His posture as the crowds pressed and He (Christ) rode on a humble donkey. Blessed is the King who came in the name of the Lord. Think of yourself walking the corridors of
our office building. Think of yourself as a listening air to someone in distress. Recognizing that God has favoured you. I declare us to be victorious underdogs.” The congregants then sang “All the way to Calvary” as we dispersed on foot to our respective churches.

Palm Sunday

Commentary

It was a moving celebration steeped in tradition and rich religious meaning. “Jesus showed humility by riding on a colt while the Romans rode through the street of Jerusalem on their imposing war horses as if they had just triumphant in battle …. this was a striking contrast to what Jesus did. By hailing Jesus as King of the Jews, this could have been viewed as provocative by the Roman authorities” According to Rev. Khan Honeyghan in his sermon at St. Jude’s Anglican Church on Palm Sunday after the public witness in the Stony Hill Square. (on said Palm Sunday).
