JOHANNESBURG _ Retired archbishop Desmond Tutu returned home on Tuesday after a weeklong hospital stay to treat a “stubborn infection” and is under doctors’ orders to rest, his South African foundation said.

Tutu returned home wearing a dressing gown embroidered with the words “Feet Up Arch,” a statement from the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation said.

Tutu and his family thanked doctors at a Cape Town hospital for “their expertise and generosity,” it added.

“They have been fantastic and we’ll be doing our best not to disappoint them,” Tutu’s daughter Mpho said. The family also thanked the public in South Africa and abroad for their messages of support.

The 83-year-old Nobel laureate was admitted to hospital last week where he received treatment for a “stubborn infection.” He was treated with a course of intensive antibiotics administered intravenously.

Tutu’s treatment was not related to his prostate cancer, which he has had for 18 years and is currently dormant, his daughter said earlier.

Back at home, Tutu is looking forward to spending quality time with his wife. His most recent public appearance was earlier this month when the couple renewed their vows after 60 years of marriage in ceremonies in Cape Town and Johannesburg. The former human rights activist also planned to catch up on the latest cricket matches, as South Africa plays Bangladesh.

Tutu was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for campaigning against apartheid.
