Phase 1 of the project is expected to produce approximately 2.4 million tonnes of LNG annually, supplying international markets while also addressing domestic energy needs.

In a joint statement, the presidents highlighted the project’s significance in achieving energy sovereignty and fostering sustainable economic transformation. They emphasized the importance of shared prosperity and the development of local content, including the training of national technicians for integration into the offshore oil and gas industry.

The GTA project, recognized as a “national strategic project” by both governments, is among the most ambitious LNG initiatives in Africa, featuring some of the continent’s deepest underwater infrastructure . The first gas production began in January 2025, with the inaugural LNG export occurring in April 2025.

This development marks a significant step toward diversifying global energy supply chains and enhancing the economic resilience of Senegal and Mauritania.
