South African Canadian future soul singer Zaki Ibrahim announces first headlining tour

Toronto, ON (July 31, 2018):  Today, Juno Award-nominated singer-songwriter Zaki Ibrahim unveils the details of her first headlining “Cutloose” tour in support of her critically-acclaimed 2018 album The Secret Life of Planets  that has seen continuous success since its release earlier this year. Coming off a recent 2018 Polaris Music Prize Long List nomination for her recording that was dubbed her “best album to date” by Pitchfork and “futuristic soul at its best” by Afropunk, Zaki has been consistently praised for her genre bending style, that meshes R&B and soul with electronic music and African inspiration.

The genesis of her emergence as one of North America’s most unique electro-soul talents and exports came after the release of her 2008 EP Eclectica, which saw her garner a Juno Award nomination for R&B/Soul Recording of the Year while earning a slot opening up for Erykah Badu at Toronto’s legendary Massey Hall. By 2013, her debut album Every Opposite also generated some of the industry’s most notable accolades, including landing on the Polaris Music Prize’s Short List; voted as one of the Top 10 albums released in Canada based on pure artistic merit, regardless of genre, sales, or record label.

By the time her 2016 four-track Orbit EP  (recorded at Red Bull Studios in Cape Town, South Africa) was released – with accompanying sci-fi planetarium art installation performances – it marked the perfect segue into Zaki’s current “sci-fi soul” sound and otherworldly live concert set which sees no bounds.

Immediately following the success of 2018’s The Secret Life of Planets album release, the Vancouver-born singer took a five-month sabbatical in South Africa, the birthplace of her father – where she spent some of her childhood and adulthood, mixed in with early motherhood experiences – to reset, and has returned back to her home base of Toronto, refreshed and ready to set out on the opening leg of her first North American headlining tour. Having tested out her intoxicating live performance over the years while opening up for a wide range of soul, R&B and hip hop stalwarts including The Roots, Erykah Badu, and Saul Williams, Zaki has prepared her whole life for this moment that will further propel her to North American and global stardom. The first leg of the “Cutloose” tour – watch the trailer here – sees Zaki intentionally returning back to her west coast Canadian roots, and kicks off in Winnipeg on September 18th

Cutloose tour tickets go on-sale August 3rd (12pm local time) and can be purchased at Zaki Ibrahim’s website here
