Total Lockdown for Jamaica’s Entertainment Sector After COVID-19 Spike in Cases

August 11, 2021 | Zhane Squire |

Strict curfew measure implemented by Jamaica’s Prime Minister Andrew Holness sees the Entertainment Sector under total lockdown as no small or large events such as concerts, parties, tailgates and round robins will be permitted.  The ban on such entertainment events starts today August 11th and continues until August 31st. It is an immediate response to contain and alleviate the current spike in COVID-19 cases across the island.

The PM continues to remind persons that the new measure will be strictly enforced and warned that the police will close down any event that is being held illegally.

The nation swiftly took to social media to express their concerns, most persons enraged by the decision of the Prime Minister and others voicing their take on the impact this will have on them and their immediate family.

It is expected that during this period, night clubs and places of amusement are to be closed. The PM mentioned these new COVID-19 containment measures during a virtual press conference on Monday (August 9).

“We are now clearly seeing our third wave,” said the PM. “These measures are deemed necessary for the next three weeks to contain the spread of the COVID-19 virus and to allow for the reopening of schools to facilitate structured face to face learning in September.”

“This goal is severely challenged. We are still hopeful that we would be able to have some form of reopening. We are targeting mid-September, but it really depends on what we as Jamaicans do in the next three to four weeks,” said the Prime Minister.
