US legislators meet with Dominican officials to talk about human rights

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic _ U.S. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and a delegation of fellow Democrats are meeting with authorities in the Dominican Republic to talk about migrants’ human rights.

The group is scheduled to meet privately with President Danilo Medina to talk about a Dominican court ruling that found people born in the Dominican Republic to migrants living there illegally are not automatically entitled to citizenship. Human rights activists have accused the government of basically rendering thousands of people stateless.

The government since then has offered only residency and work permits under a new program.

Friday’s meeting comes after U.S. legislators spent two days in Cuba and met with Vice-President Miguel Diaz-Canel to talk about economic reforms and other issues.
