Yona is inspirational – Grange
Rio de Janeiro, August 16, 2016 – The Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, the Honourable Olivia Grange, believes several Jamaicans have been become interested in diving as a sport, thanks to Yona Knight-Wisdom.
Knight-Wisdom became the first person to represent Jamaica in a diving event at the Olympic Games. He competed in the 3M Springboard event and narrowly missed qualifying for the finals.
Minister Grange said:
“Yona came this close to the finals in his first Olympics and with some pressure of being a pioneer for Jamaica in diving. He was short just 9 points — only 9 points. That’s no simple accomplishment. It is a big deal. He did very well and I believe that he’s inspiring young people to get involved in diving as a sport. It will be up to us, sports administrators, sponsors and volunteers to keep the momentum and sustain the interest in diving.”
