GAINESVILLE, Va. _ Tiger Woods is in contention for his first victory in nearly two years after a 5-under 66 in the second round of the Quicken Loans National.

Woods birdied six of his final 13 holes. The unlikeliest was his final birdie, a 36-footer on his next-to-last hole that he celebrated with a big fist pump. With most of Friday’s early starters finished, Woods is tied for second, one shot behind leader David Lingmerth.

Woods is the tournament host and a two-time winner of the event. It is being played for the first time at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club.

Woods’ best finish in eight previous tournaments this year is a tie for 17th. His ranking has fallen to 266th. Two years ago, he was No. 1.
