KINGSTON, Jamaica _ Jamaican police say a pair of gunmen engaged in a shootout with officers after injuring a group of people in a downtown area of the Caribbean island’s capital.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force said Sunday that two gunmen riding on a motorcycle opened fire on four people on a street in West Kingston. Police say the pair then shot at patrolmen a short distance down the road.

Officers say they recovered a loaded pistol dropped by the shooters, who escaped on the motorcycle.

Three of the injured people are being treated for their injuries at a nearby hospital. They are listed in stable condition. The other injured person has been treated and released.

An independent commission that investigates allegations of police abuses is investigating the police report of the shootout.
