Toronto, ON  Legendary hip hop icon Slick Rick makes his Toronto concert debut at The Phoenix Concert Theatre on February 11th. Born to Jamaican parents in London England, the Bronx New York-bred rapper is widely considered one of the greatest rappers of all time, with GRAMMY® Award nominations, numerous Def Jam multi-platinum albums to his name, plus he’s the most sampled hip-hop artist in history (!), appearing in dozens of songs by artists, including Beyoncé, Nas, Eminem, Mariah Carey, Beastie Boys, The Notorious B.I.G., TLC, Kanye West, MF Doom, Black Star, Miley Cyrus, and Snoop Dogg. Likewise, his list of incredible hit song collaborations include ones with Outkast  (Andre 3000, Big Boi) on “Da Art of Storytellin'” and “Street Talkin'”. It’s why he counts some of the most influential people in the world as ardent admirers—whether it be Eminem declaring, “I’m just a product of Slick Rick” on 2020’s “Godzilla,” Jay-Z citing him as an inspiration on Netflix’s My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman, A-list star Idris Elba signing him to his 7 Wallace UK imprint, Mark Ronson dissecting his work as part of a TED Talk, or Mariah Carey welcoming him on stage to perform their duet “Giving Me Life” during a sold-out show at Radio City Music Hall in 2019. It’s why no hip hop celebration is complete until somebody busts out any of his string of hit singles; “La-Di-Da-Di”, “Mona Lisa”, “Hey Young World” or “Children’s Story”. Slick Rick is also synonymous with the explosion of hip hop fashion, as his fashion sense is just as recognizable as his smooth flow and didactic bars. “He still loves his Clarks Wallabees, which he customized with a platform sole, and he is still fond of big pieces of jewelry” (WWD). Rick has starred in a high-profile MCM “POP-IN @ NORDSTROM” campaign and has collaborated with brands such as Puma, Ballys, Urban Outfitters, Odd Sox, and Optics, to name a few. And of course, he was ranked #1 on “The Best Dressed Rappers Of All Time” on The 40 Flyest List. But would you expect anything less? He’s Slick Rick. Don’t miss what is sure to be one of the best Toronto concerts of 2024.
