Jamaica Stresses Importance of UN and Multilateralism in Addressing Global Challenges

In a recent address at a Diplomatic Day event held in downtown Kingston, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator the Hon. Kamina Johnson Smith, emphasized the crucial role of the United Nations (UN) in promoting economic progression and addressing escalating global conflicts and uncertainties.

Minister Johnson Smith reiterated Jamaica’s firm support for multilateralism as the most rational approach for collective action in tackling pressing global issues. She underscored the significance of upholding international law and respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all member states.

Expressing concern over ongoing conflicts worldwide, Minister Johnson Smith condemned the war in Ukraine, attacks on Israel, and the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. She also emphasized Jamaica’s vigilance regarding regional developments, particularly with its sister country Guyana.

Highlighting the urgency of addressing climate change, especially for vulnerable Small Island Developing States (SIDS) like Jamaica, Minister Johnson Smith stressed the need for adequate financing to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement. She welcomed the operationalization of the Loss and Damage Fund and urged both emerging and developed economies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in accordance with international commitments.

Addressing the trafficking of small arms and light weapons, Minister Johnson Smith called for collective support from all countries, emphasizing the detrimental impact of crime and violence on socio-economic progress. Jamaica supports initiatives like the Mexican case against gun manufacturers and has implemented legislation such as the Firearms (Prohibition, Restriction and Regulation) Act to combat this issue.

The minister also highlighted Jamaica’s domestic efforts to strengthen security measures, including modernized legislation and enhanced cooperation with regional and international partners to bolster port security and border control.

In conclusion, Minister Kamina Johnson Smith’s address reflects Jamaica’s unwavering commitment to global cooperation, peace, and security, while also addressing domestic security challenges. The nation stands firmly behind the principles of the United Nations and advocates for collective action to address the world’s most pressing issues.
