2022 Excellence Awards Honours 16 African-Canadian Leaders

Michael ‘Pinball’ Clemons, Emmanuel Jal, Senator Wanda Thomas Bernard among the recipients

October 25, 2022 (Toronto, ON) – The prestigious Excellence Awards Gala presented by Afroglobal Television takes place on Saturday October 29th, 2022 at the Meridian Arts Centre, 5040 Yonge Street, North York, Red Carpet/VIP Reception at 7PM, Awards Show at 8PM. “These awards celebrate leadership and excellence at the national and international levels,” explained Patricia Bebia Mawa, Executive Vice-President of Silvertrust Media and Afroglobal Television. “It also produces mentors and role models for youth in the Crossover Mentorship Program.”

The Excellence Awards Gala showcases the achievements of individuals, organizations, businesses and agencies that make a profound difference in the lives of people of African descent and transform the communities where they live. Here are this year’s recipients:

  • Leadership – Jeffrey L. Orridge, Chief Executive Officer, TVOntario

  • Science & Technology – Claudette McGowan, Global IT Leader & CEO, Protexxa

  • Lifetime Achievement – Hon. Senator Wanda Thomas Bernard, PhD, C.M., O.N.S

  • Professional Achievement – Charles Osulji, CEO & Managing Partner, Osuji & Smith Lawyers

  • Global Impact – Michael Pinball Clemons, The Pinball Clemons Foundation

  • Renaissance – Dr. Opiyo Oloya, Associate Vice-President, Western University

  • Media – Joan Jenkins, Executive Director, Black Screen Office

  • Visionary – Dr. Rustum Southwell, CEO, Black Business Initiative

  • Rising Star – Olunike Wendy Adeliyi, Film and Television Actress

  • Marcus Garvey Memorial Award – Steve Anderson, Former Deputy Mayor, Town of Shelburne

  • Entertainment – Emmanuel Jal, Singer, Actor and Activist

  • Nelson Mandela Humanitarian Award – Shola Alabi, President, African Missions Canada (AMCA)

  • Marcus Garvey Memorial Award – Kenneth Daniel, Coach, Mentor & Community Leader

  • Community Development – Dr. Roz Roach, Founder & Executive Director, Dr. Roz’s Healing Place

  • Enterprise – Andrew Enofe, Real Estate Professional, Investor & Business Leader

  • Heritage – Grace Carter-Henry Lyons, Founder & Musical Director, The Heritage Singers

Since 2004, the red carpet awards gala has honoured achievers and brought together people of African background and others of goodwill, to celebrate inspiring success stories. Past recipients of the awards include Hon. Jean Augustine The Right Hon. Portia Simpson Miller, the 7th Prime Minister of Jamaica; Kevin Williams, President and Managing Director of General Motors Canada; Professor Wole Soyinka, Nobel Laureate; Douglas Orane, Chairman of Grace Foods; Wes Hall, Founder & Chairman of Black North; Daniel Igali, Olympic Gold Medalist and David Oyelowo, Hollywood Star.
