Carnival City Kicks of Tomorrow Night with Mas Factor Frontline Showcase Competition

Opening Ceremony Launches 12 Days of Celebrating Caribbean Culture

July 26, 2022  (Toronto, ON) – House of Culture presents Carnival City kicking off 12 days of family friendly fun starting at 6:30pm on Wednesday July 27, 2022 at Ajax Downs, 320 Audley Road – (across from Casino Ajax) and runs until Sunday August 7th, 2022.  Durham Region comes alive with dance, food, masquerade costumes, steelpan and so much more. “We welcome everyone out to experience the creative talents of the Caribbean community through art, music, carnival, and live performances. It is so important that we honour the Caribbean legacy through the teachings of our history and culture,” explains Gerard Weekes, House of Culture Founder and Producer of Carnival City.

The Mas Factor Frontline Competition show launches the 12-day celebration with an Opening Ceremony that includes invited guests: Durham Regional Chair John Henry, Ajax Deputy Mayor Marilyn Crawford, Invest Durham Manager of Tourism Brandon Pickard, Acting Pickering Mayor Shaheen Butt, Ajax MPP Patrice Barnes, Ajax MP Mark Holland, Whitby MP Ryan Turnball, Whitby Councillor Maleeha Shahid, St. Kitts and Nevis Honorary Consul Brenda Foreman, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Consul General Fitzgerald Huggins, Dominica Trade and Investment Commissioner Frances Del Sol and Cuba Consul General Jorge Yanier Castellanos.

As they aim for the top honour of the Best Costume of the Year, Mas Factor will give attendees an evening of pageantry with costumes from leading local and international designers. Hosted by Lady P with music provided by Kalabash, Nailah Peters, Earl LaPierre Jr., Wendy Jones, Omega Band, D’Bandit, D’Ultimate Sting, Sons of Steel and Stylez.

Fifteen designers will compete by showcasing their frontline costumes for judges and a live audience. It will be adjudicated by Marceline David and judged by Reality Stars Jillian and Warren Danford – who are also Ajax residents, Inclusion and Diversity Specialist Narisa DaSilva, Rogers Sports & Media All IN Leader Sharon Hinds, CEO, Executive Director of ArtXperiential. Shawn Cuffle, and designer Eve Manifold.

Experienced and upcoming designers in the industry will display their fabulous costumes and showcase their skills for cash prizes ranging from $1000 to $5000. “It’s imperative that these designers be recognized and nurtured in the development of their craft and creativity. Having a show like this will also improve the viability and economic value of the industry,” points out Joan Pierre, Carnival City Organizer and Founding Director, House of Culture.
