BEENIE MAN, POPCAAN COLLAB WITH JEREMIH
Dancehall artistes Popcaan and Beenie Man have collaborated with American singer Jeremih and British rappers Konan and Krept for the remix of their single, ‘Freak Of The Week’.
The video for the single was released in May and has already received more than six million views on YouTube.
Jeremih is known for his singles Birthday Sex and Don’t Tell Em. He has also collaborated with recording artistes including Chris Brown, 50 Cent, French Montana, Fabolous, Wale and August Alsina.
Konan and Krept are popular England-based rappers. Their first major release was the mixtape Young Kingz released on September 2, 2013. The duo is known for their strong impact in the UK underground hip-hop scene.
Freak of The Week sees the Def Jam-signed artistes sampling Beenie Man’s Who Am I dancehall instrumental that was produced by Jeremy Harding.
One half of the duo Konan – the son of ska, rocksteady and reggae icon Delroy Wilson – recently told UK’s SBTV that he plans to show dancehall and reggae’s influence in his music.
“The first single is a sample of a Beenie Man song, so it goes hands in hand. My father knew Beenie Man, so it is a good coincidence,” Konan said.
The original version of Who Am I was released in 1997 and went to No.40 on the Billboard Hot 100, No.15 on the Billboard Hot R&B singles chart and No. 6 on the Billboard Hot Rap singles chart. It was also sampled by American rapper Rock City earlier this year for his effort called I’m That.
Popcaan, who is currently unable to travel to the US, has collaborated with American artistes like Snoop Lion, Pusha T and Acehood in recent times.
Meanwhile, Beenie Man recently collaborated with Azealia Banks and Young Jeezy. His manager Blue also told the STAR that there were several other collaborations in the pipeline for the artiste.
