Canada opens women’s U20 championship with win over Trinidad and Tobago
SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras _ Canada opened the 2015 CONCACAF women’s under-20 championship with a 2-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago on Thursday.
Player-of-the-match Sarah Kinzner and second-half sub Martina Loncar supplied the scoring for Canada, which will face Jamaica on Saturday.
Rylee Foster had the clean sheet in goal.
Kinzner got things started for the Canadian side when she put a left-footed blast home just 16 minutes into the contest and Loncar finished off a cross in the 82nd for insurance.
Canada coach Daniel Worthington was pleased to see his club come out on the winning end with such an inexperienced roster.
“Our team featured six international debuts today,” said Worthington. “We are here at this tournament to learn (and) there were some key tournament learning experiences in the match.”
The six players who made their youth tournament debuts were Alex Lamontagne, Loncar, Ashley Moreira, Taylor Pryce, Marike Saint-Pierre-Mousset, and Camilla Shymka.
Jamaica and Honduras settled for a 2-2 draw on Thursday.
The top-three nations in the eight-nation competition will qualify for the FIFA U20 women’s World Cup in 2016.
