Jamaica to Establish STEM Innovation Teaching Center in Kingston’s National Heroes Circle

Kingston, Jamaica – In a move to bolster Jamaica’s commitment to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education, the government has announced plans to establish a groundbreaking STEM innovation teaching center at National Heroes Circle in Kingston. This initiative, disclosed by Prime Minister Andrew Holness, forms part of a comprehensive redevelopment plan for the area, slated to include a new parliament building and various government structures.

Speaking at the Future Ready International Conference held at the University of Technology (UTech) campus in Kingston on April 24, Prime Minister Holness underscored the pivotal role of STEM education in propelling Jamaica’s development and enhancing its global competitiveness. He emphasized the need to strategically locate key institutions in areas with adequate infrastructure, highlighting the proximity of the proposed center to MICO University College.

The Prime Minister outlined Jamaica’s ambitious vision for STEM education, citing the establishment of four centers of excellence for STEM in collaboration with the HEART/NSTA Trust. Moreover, plans are in motion for the construction of six STEM schools across the island, with the inaugural institution slated for development in St. Ann.

One of the noteworthy initiatives supporting Jamaica’s STEM education agenda is the STEM Tertiary Scholarship Programme, unveiled last year. Under this program, 1,250 Jamaican students will receive scholarships over the next five years to pursue STEM teaching careers at MICO University College, aimed at equipping educators with the necessary skills to inspire future generations in STEM disciplines.

In addition to these initiatives, the government is implementing measures to enhance digital connectivity, including the provision of free Wi-Fi hotspots and the distribution of 10,000 laptops to teachers and students.
