Perspective: Monkeypox Disease

July 23, 2022 | By Hopeton O’Connor-Dennie |

A relatively new disease has been around called Monkeypox. There has been widespread speculation as to what this new strain of virus is. We were initially told that it was similar to the Smallpox disease and then we also heard it was akin to Chicken Pox. One thing is certain is that it can kill although not considered very dangerous as Covid or variants of the COVID 19 pandemic.

The effects of this disease is said to be mild.

Jamaica

There has been one reported case identified in Jamaica. The Health Minister Hon. Christopher Tufton announced that there was a confirmed case found in a visitor who is staying in Clarendon. The patient has been quarantined and admitted at the May Pen Public General Hospital.

Escaped

Then there is a newspaper article that said this male patient with suspected Monkeypox had walked out of the May Pen Hospital. The patient reported that he told a doctor he was leaving the hospital to go home to attend to his five year old daughter. His daughter was said to be getting restive.

Escaped Through A Window

Then the hospital authorities reported that the patient did not walk out of the hospital, instead he escaped through a window and got away into a waiting car. The window has since been secured. He is back in the hospital, having been collected at his home by the police. His family is said to have assisted in his capture.

Commentary

We are told to our concern that the patient was not under legal quarantine. This has been corrected. We are glad the matter has been settled. It is quite an embarrassment to say the least. We learn as we go. Contact tracing is being done. This form of amateur conduct is inexcusable.

What is your perspective? This is ours.
