POPULAR sound system selector Marlon ‘Boom Boom’ Wizard regards his nomination in the Youth View Awards (YVA) as recognition for years of hard work.

He is nominated along with disc jockeys Chrome, Liquid, Bambino and Wah Wa in the Favourite Selector category.

“The nomination signifies that I am doing something good an’ the younger generation of music fans are gravitating towards the work I am doing,” he told the Jamaica Observer. “It is a good look for me because I am the only selector who is not on a radio station, to have received a nomination.”

A regular at dancehall events including Uptown Mondays (held at Savanna Plaza), Hennessey Bounty Sundays and Bembe Thursdays (Escape in New Kingston) and Boasy Tuesdays (Balmoral Avenue), 29-year-old Boom Boom has earned his stripes.

The Grants Pen resident began his career on the Invaders sound system in that St Andrew community.

“As a youth, I was introduced to the music by artistes like Bounty Killer, Singing Sweet, Flex and Mavado who helped me along the way. I also have a great relationship with Bass Odyssey, Stone Love and Travellers (sound systems),” he said.

Boom Boom believes sound system selectors and disc jockeys should come together to expose and break new talent.

“A lot of new artistes and producers are not getting the help from the selectors and radio DJs. A lot of artistes have talent but are not coming to the fore because of the lack of support,” he reasoned. “Mi jus’ waan si the thing run pon a balance, the crab inna barrel thing naw go work.”

The YVAs sponsored by the Jamaica Observer, takes place Saturday at the National Indoor Centre in St Andrew.
