Toronto Caribbean Carnival Junior King & Queen Showcase Set to Dazzle Spectators at Scarborough Town Centre

This year’s showcase is the first to include children with special needs

(Toronto, ON) – The Junior King & Queen Showcase takes place on Sunday, July 16th at Scarborough Town Centre located at 300 Borough Dr, Scarborough from 2 pm to 8 pm. The event site is located at Parking Lot 3A on the North side of the STC complex and will include a marketplace with Food Vendors, Arts & Craft Vendors, and a children’s amusement zone.

This annual competition is a chance to allow young participants to showcase the Caribbean’s rich heritage and vibrant culture and select the King and Queen of this year’s Junior Carnival set for Saturday July 22nd, 2023 in the community of Malvern.

“The Junior King & Queen Showcase has become a much-anticipated staple of the Carnival,” exclaimed Mischka Crichton, Festival Management Committee CEO. “It’s an opportunity to further educate younger generations on the importance of carnival and its traditions, and to give them a chance to celebrate and be proud of their heritage.”

The showcase will include a spectacular display of intricately designed costumes, each representing a unique theme and story. Each costume is a testament to the creativity and dedication of costume creators. Contestants will be judged on visual impact, creativity, authenticity, craftsmanship, clarity of theme, and presentation in competition for a cash prize.

“It’s so important to us that everyone has a chance to participate in the celebrations of Carnival” explains Jennifer Hirlehey, Chair, Festival Management Committee, producers of Toronto Caribbean Carnival. “This year’s Junior King & Queen Showcase includes Lux Junior Band, with a section that has children with special needs. We want to continue to emphasize that this Festival is an inclusive space for all to participate in Caribbean culture.”

Here is the order of events for the day:

  • 1:30 pm – DJ Opens Event

  • 2:00 pm – Canada National Anthem, Welcome, Land Acknowledgement & Greetings

  • 2:15 pm – Steelpan Performance

  • 2:45 pm Tassa Drummers

  • 3:00 pm Toddlers – 0-5

  • Junior Female Individuals – 6-10

  • Junior Male Individuals – 6-10

  • Junior Female Individuals – Under 16

  • Junior Female Individuals – Under 16

  • Junior Queen – Under 16

  • Junior King – Under 16

  • Soca Performance

  • Results and Presentation of Prizes

The Junior King & Queen showcase comes one week ahead of the Junior Carnival Parade which takes place on Saturday, July 22nd at Malvern Community Centre & Neilson Park.
