PORT-OF-SPAIN _ Police preparing to search a house on this eastern Caribbean island were attacked, and three civilians died in the ensuing gunbattle, Trinidad authorities said.
Senior Police Superintendent Johnny Abraham told the Daily Express newspaper that the officers came under fire as they surrounded the house to search for arms and ammunition late Tuesday in the western part of the island.
He said the three men shot by officers were taken to a hospital and were pronounced dead.
