United States defeats Cuba in straight sets at women’s volleyball World Cup

OKAYAMA, Japan(AP) _ The United States overpowered Cuba 25-15, 25-11, 25-15 to remain top of the standings at the women’s volleyball World Cup on Tuesday.

Tetori Dixon led the way with 21 points and five blocks as the U.S. improved to 7-1 for 22 points in the standings. Four-time World Cup winner Cuba dropped to 2-6.

In other matches, Russia bounced back from Monday’s defeat to Serbia with a comfortable 25-14, 25-10, 25-20 win over Peru to stay one point back.

China also stayed one point off the pace after defeating Argentina 25-14, 25-15, 25-20. South Korea dropped the opening set but rallied to defeat the Dominican Republic 18-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-18.

Elsewhere, Kenya beat Algeria 25-14, 25-11, 25-11.

The third round of the 12-nation tournament begins on Friday in Nagoya.
