Bridging the Gap, Celebrating Black Contractors

An Historic Event Awarding Excellence in the Construction Industry

May 4th,2022 (Toronto, ON) –  The Afro Canadian Contractors Association (ACCA) is hosting the inaugural Bridging the Gap, Celebrating Black Contractors Gala and Awards Ceremony on Saturday June 4th, 2022 at the Hyatt Place Toronto/Mississauga Centre, 5787 Hurontario Street in Mississauga from 6PM to 11PM.

“This is a night to celebrate and support Black contractors and construction workers who are producing excellence in the sector where they are traditionally underrepresented,” explains Stephen Callender, ACCA President. “We are making history and bringing together over 250 members, community partners and supporters to honour those who are exemplifying our organization’s principles for Black contractors across Canada.”

The Gala’s keynote speaker is Karla Avis-Birch, Chief Planning Officer – Planning & Development for Metrolinx.  Throughout her career, Karla has overseen the construction and completion of countless instrumental infrastructural pieces and has accelerated the delivery of service.  In her previous role as Vice President, GO Stations Capital Delivery, she established the first Metrolinx Project Controls & Design Standards Office, in partnership with Infrastructure Ontario on the procurement of Public Private Partnerships (P3) projects, and was accountable for the delivery of transformational GO Expansion programs. Karla’s proven record of excellence garnered her a feature in the Women of Influence “Meet a Role Model” article and a spot amongst the 2020 Women in Infrastructure Network (WIN) Outstanding Leaders short list. She also served as the 2017 and 2018 President of the Women in Transportation Seminars (WTS) Toronto Area Chapter.
