The Bahamian government says the five were rescued by the Royal Bahamas Defence Force after their single engine Cessna went down late Monday about 15 miles (25 kilometres) southeast of Nassau. A government statement Tuesday reported that they were examined at a hospital in Nassau and released. All five are from the Bahamas. Their plane had taken off from Crooked Island.
A U.S. Coast Guard air crew was called in to help with the search and spotted the five people floating on a life raft about nine miles (14 kilometres) off Nassau.
