35 injured after bush crashes along busiest highway in Dominican Republic

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic _ Thirty-five people have been injured following a bus crash in the Dominican Republic.

A traffic division spokesman says the bus was carrying 50 people when it ran off the country’s busiest highway on Monday.

Diego Pesqueira said authorities are investigating what caused the crash that occurred on the Duarte highway just north of the capital of Santo Domingo. He said three people are in critical condition and that eight people overall remain hospitalized, including the driver.

The Dominican Republic has the highest traffic-related death rate in the western Hemisphere with 29 deaths per 100,000 people.
