KINGSTON, Jamaica _ Heavy rains have washed away a bridge and flooded low-lying areas in several parishes in eastern Jamaica.

Military rescuers have brought more than a dozen stranded motorists to safety in St. Catherine’s Bog Walk Gorge, the most severely flooded area. No deaths or major injuries have been reported.

On Sunday, a team from the country’s national works agency was trying to clear roadways of debris left by a landslide and receding flood waters.

Jamaica has been receiving sustained rains since Friday. The island’s meteorological service says the rains are from a stationary front over the area.

Officials say a flash flood watch is in effect for low-lying and flood-prone areas in the eastern part of the Caribbean island of 2.7 million people.
