Jamaican Ministry Unveils Ambitious Plans to Enhance Overseas Work Programme

In a bid to bolster Jamaica’s Overseas Work Programme, the Ministry of Labour and Social Security has announced a series of groundbreaking initiatives aimed at empowering workers and improving service delivery.

Portfolio Minister, Hon. Pearnel Charles Jr., unveiled the ambitious plans during a statement to the House of Representatives on Tuesday, April 9. He highlighted the importance of building the capacity and employability skills of workers through human resources development and training. These efforts aim to ensure that Jamaican workers are better prepared and equipped for overseas employment opportunities.

One key aspect of the strategy involves collaborating with the HEART/NSTA Trust to provide employment readiness training. This partnership signifies a concerted effort to enhance the skills and readiness of individuals seeking employment abroad.

Furthermore, the Ministry plans to enhance the screening and selection process for candidates participating in the programme. Members of Parliament are encouraged to conduct their own screening to ensure that selected candidates meet the necessary criteria, including age, literacy, passport validity, and relevant experience.

To support MPs in their selection process, the Ministry will host online guidance sessions on Thursday, April 11. These sessions aim to provide MPs and their teams with the necessary tools and information to conduct effective prescreening activities.
