England drops senior players Bell, Ballance, Anderson, Broad, looks to future in ODI squad

LEEDS, England (AP) _ England has dropped senior players Gary Ballance, Ian Bell, Stuart Broad and James Anderson from its one-day squad for the five-match series against New Zealand, and picked a 14-man group with one eye on the future.

Uncapped batsman Sam Billings was called up for the first time in the 50-over format, while Mark Wood, Jason Roy and David Willey will look to add to their first ODI caps received this summer against Ireland.

England selector James Whitaker says “this series presents an excellent opportunity to look at players we believe can play a key role for England over the next four years as we build toward the next Cricket World Cup.”

Only seven members of the England squad played at the World Cup. Allrounder Moeen Ali is rested.
