Reaction to International Reggae Day 2020

“It’s always an amazing experience when the world joins us, as Jamaicans, to celebrate a product of our rich and diverse culture. On this International Reggae Day, under the theme #FromJamrock2HipHop, it acknowledges the power of our influence as many may not have known that Hip Hop, like Dancehall and Reggaeton, were directly influenced by our Reggae music culture. On this day, we are able to highlight the extensive and close relationship that both genres have, and the history shared by reggae and hip-hop.

Hip Hop was said to have originated in the South Bronx section of New York City in the late 1970s. Afrika Bambatta, Grandmaster Flash & DJ Kool Herc were said to be the founding fathers of the Genre and DJ Herc’s roots are right here in Kingston, Jamaica. On this day we remember the icons of the Reggae culture, dead and alive. We also honour and thank the Game changers who ensure that our music lives on, and our legacy is felt (and heard) beyond borders for generations to come. #ThisIsMyReggae
