Stratigakis scores in Canada’s 2 1 loss to Haiti at U 17 CONCACAF championships

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada _ Sarah Stratigakis’s goal at the 77th minute was not enough as Canada fell to Haiti 2-1 on Monday at the CONCACAF women’s under-17 soccer championships.

Stratigakis, from Woodbridge, Ont., slid and redirected a pass off her outstretched leg to put Canada up 1-0. Haiti tied it 1-1 three minutes later then took the lead on a penalty kick in the 83rd minute.

Canada finished group play in the tournament in second behind host Grenada.

The Canadians were already guaranteed a spot in the semifinals on Friday. The winner of each semi qualifies for the U17 women’s World Cup.

Canada has participated in all four FIFA U-17 women’s World Cups since the biennial tournament was initiated in 2008, including three trips to the quarter-finals.
