Cobra gets high on Toni Braxton

TONI Braxton was one of the hottest acts in pop music in 1996. The Babyface protege had platinum success that year with Secrets, her second album.

The set produced a number one hit in You’re Making Me High, written by Babyface and distributed by LaFace, the label he started with songwriting partner L A Reid.

You’re Making Me High got a dancehall makeover in 1996 with a jamming remix by American producer Salaam Remi and Jamaican Clifton ‘Specialist’ Dillon.

The remix featured deejay Cobra who was signed to Dillon’s Shang company. Four years earlier, Dillon and Cobra teamed on the latter’s gold album Easy to Wet, Hard to Dry album which produced the hit song Flex.

The Braxton/Cobra combination hit the right note with Jamaican fans through power-play on radio and in the dancehall.

Significatly, it set the tone for similar collaborations. Janet Jackson and Elephant Man rocked on (Don’t Stop) All Night Long while Alicia Keys worked with Cham on a remix of his Ghetto Story.

Braxton performed for the first time in Jamaica in 2009 at Reggae Sumfest. She is billed for the Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival at the Trelawny Multi-Purpose Stadium this weekend.
