No New Taxes

There has been loud calls by Opposition and other public commentators for the government to reduce taxes on gas. There was a $7 dollars per litre tax added to create a hedge fund by the PNP in 2015.  A certain amount was collected for eleven months, by the PNP under PM Portia Simpson Miller, but there was no transparency.  After three months the other 8 months were never fully accounted for.  Instead of reducing this tax the Finance Minister is creating a JA$2 billion fund to assist the less vulnerable and the taxi sector.  Details are to be announced.

“Two billion dollars in a relief Package to cushion the effects of rising oil prices to assist the most vulnerable like the taxi sector, details to be finalized”

Dr. Nigel Clarke stated in parliament as it relates to the Ukrainian conflict with Russia and a possible rise in oil prices, which is likely to occur.

It was a strident and very confident looking Finance Minister Dr. The Honourable Nigel Clarke, MP as he addressed Parliament at the opening of the 2022/23 budget debate Tuesday, March 8, 2022 in Kingston Jamaica W.I.
