THE PASSING OF FIDEL CASTRO, FORMER PRESIDENT OF CUBA

932052-fidel-castroOn the death of former Cuban President Fidel Castro, the NDM shares in the grief that bereaves his family, friends and the people of Cuba.

The NDM said that, notwithstanding the differences in political philosophy (between the movement and Fidel Castro), the Movement recognizes Fidel Castro’s contribution to his country, the region, and the world at large. It said that Fidel Castro was a man of remarkable eminence and wore the mantle that distinguishes great leaders and stood among the outstanding leaders of his era, a true Cuban patriot, a strong defender of egalitarianism against all odds, standing up against powerful forces.

“Certainly, the NDM does not subscribe to communism but we see some common grounds with Castro’s commitment and efforts to build a country in which there is equality for all. We hail his contribution to many humanitarian causes”, said NDM President Peter Townsend.

The NDM recognized Fidel Castro as an iconic champion in the struggles against economic oppression faced by Third World countries; a warrior in the resistance to apartheid and a legend who impacted the world and has left an indelible mark in the world’s political history book.

May his soul rest in peace.
